Amethyst Forest (2023) was completed in October but the inspiration happened in my summer travels to Thunder Bay where I went amethyst mining with my family. These violet crystals we dug out of the ground made me want to see a whole glorious forest filled with them! Amethyst is actually quartz that's been exposed to iron and the process of gemstone irradiation causes it to turn this beautiful purple color - strangely compliment to the sienna iron ore often found with them! I made the trees look like this iron. The sunbeam in the center shimmers through and on all the crystal surfaces. I love this painting! As amethyst is my love's birthstone I always think of love when I'm near one.
